Living Without a Wall

Two men, Moses and Elijah appeared in glorious splendour, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Luke 9:30 NIV

I have always been intrigued by the showing up of Moses and Elijah on the Mountain of Transfiguration in Luke 9:30.

I was reading it again recently and reflecting on responses from my readers, who are saying, keep giving us thoughts and perspectives on Heaven.

Now, you might think this feedback is from grey hair (or no hair) only; not true, for younger readers are also saying the same.

Yes, Jesus is building His Kingdom and as He does, the intensity of the spiritual battle increases, which I believe we are seeing today. In Luke 12, Jesus told His disciples and us to be on watch and perhaps the increase of interest in what lies beyond the veil, could be a drawing of hearts and minds to our eternal hope.

As I reflect on this fantastic account, I believe we are given some special insights into what we will be like after we walk through the door of death.

There are seven takeaways for me, and I share them with you, my fellow sojourners.

  1. When Moses and Elijah appear to talk to Jesus, they are alive as individuals. They are not spirits, rather separate individuals.

  2. There is personal identity, and they are recognised by Peter, James and John. Interesting, for these three had never met them, nor seen any photographs, yet they knew immediately who they were.

  3. They are alive as human beings. They are not angels and do not have any wings. They are like Jesus, after His resurrection.

  4. They are alive in a conscious state. They both walk onto that mountain, so to speak, at the same moment.

  5. They appear in their glorified bodies. They have the ability to appear or disappear, just like Jesus could after His resurrection. Yes, they were similar in structure, yet different to what they had been prior on earth.

  6. They evidently enjoyed fellowship, friendship with each other. The discussion they have with Jesus, must have been discussed beforehand.

  7. Moses and Elijah were in touch with earth. They talked about what would happen at Jerusalem. Both Heaven and Earth were awaiting the cross. I wonder if we will not be amazed, just how much those who have gone to heaven before us have been eagerly waiting and praying for us. I think they know more than we realize.

The above are thoughts from my musings and also from a devotional by J. Sidlow Baxter.

I had an elderly First Nations Chief say to me many years ago,

“The white man has placed a wall between life here and the spirit life. We live without a wall.”

So, as I look at the intensity of the battle, I am reminded of a quote of God’s promises.

“God’s promises are like the stars; the darker the night, the brighter they shine.”

My friends, let’s live without a wall, for God always keeps His Word!
