Psalm 91:11
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
Psalm 91:11
A warm summer’s night, a weathered hemlock dock, stars so close you believe you can reach out and touch them. The Milky Way, hauntingly a shadowy band of glimmering light against the night sky, a friend to share the majesty of this show with. Together following satellites, looking for that one, which we will watch as it crosses the sky and then disappears. We then time it, knowing it takes about 90 minutes to circle our small earth and then, there it is again. Wow!
The US Department of Defence recently announced a plan to launch one thousand spy satellites over the next decade. Other powers are doing the same.
Not sure what I feel about all this, though it must be getting to be a major traffic jam up there. How can a young boy ever be able to selectively choose one satellite and then track it 90 minutes later. In 1960, it was so much easier.
In Zechariah 1, there is an amazing picture given to us of what this man was shown by God. He saw a group of horses and riders in a grove of myrtle trees, and was told by an angel, that they are part of a surveillance team that “the Lord has sent to go throughout the earth” and then to report back.
If space is a busy place with all these satellites, our atmosphere is so much more. Hebrews 1:14 tells us angels are always on the alert to help God’s people in invisible ways. At times, I believe they can be visible, as I read stories of these “Emissaries” appearing to help.
Denise and I have a friend who has a special gift to be able to see into that other dimension at times. I remember interviewing an applicant for a lead pastor position with the search team, of which our friend was part of. The man was a faithful, battle worn missionary who had experienced such pain and brokenness as he served overseas. He told us his story, and you could hardly breathe as we listened to what he had gone through. He finished, we prayed for him, and he left the room. The other members quietly left, and it was only me and our friend. She was quiet and I asked her, “What did you see?”
She responded, “When he came into our room several angels were with him. One very large angel calmly stood behind him with massive hands on his shoulders, as he told us his story.” Both of us, with tears running down our cheeks, said, “we need to tell him. I sense he is to go back to his mission field, and he is not alone.”
Our God is aware of every threat you face, every burden you bear, every health issue you struggle with, every blessing you enjoy, and every decision you need to make. He also is aware of the chaos our world is in and as I have written before, “Jesus is building His Kingdom!”
Be encouraged today, and as you live in your “thin space,” there are angels guarding you. You may never see them, however, oh the stories they will tell us in that new Heaven and Earth.
I can hear one now saying, “Bruce, do you remember that time……..”.
This summer, take a moment, away from the lights of a city, to gaze into the night sky. Quote Psalm 91:11 and reach out and for a moment, feel the grasp of a hand through the veil.
If you do not have the strength to leave your home, no worries, the reality of Psalm 91 is with you.
